- Neighborhood Services Information
The City of McHenry requires building permits for new construction, additions, alterations, repairs and maintenance (other than maintenance of cosmetic finishes) for both indoor and outdoor work on residential and commercial/industrial buildings. The building permit process involves three main steps: application and submittal, plan review and inspections.
Feel free to contact Construction and Neighborhood Services before doing the work in order to determine if a permit is needed and what is needed to apply for the permit. We are typically available between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday thru Friday to help guide you through the permit process and answer your questions. The permit process helps to ensure that minimum safety standards are met and that the construction meets local, State and Federal requirements.
Remember that building permits must be obtained prior to the start of work and that any work started without obtaining all required permits will be stopped and charged additional fees. Make sure that prior to starting any project you understand all building codes and ordinances relating to the proposed work. Failure to do so could result in unforeseen costs and delays on completing the project.
